The heartbreaking viral story of Landon, who died of cardiac arrest from dehydration after his mom and dad didn’t realize he wasn’t taking in enough colostrum (early breastmilk), illustrates the worst scenario. After all, the loss of one’s child is by far the steepest possible cost of breastfeeding complications. But many more children suffer short and long term consequences of underfeeding. According to the Fed is Best Foundation, a volunteer organization of parents and health professionals who study data on infant feeding and seek to “provide information on the safest, most brain-protective methods for breastfeeding, mixed-feeding, formula-feeding, pumped-milk-feeding and tube-feeding mothers and families…”
